Flower Essences: A Natural Approach to Supporting Pet Wellness

Flower essences, a form of complementary medicine, have gained popularity for their benefits in promoting emotional and mental well-being in both humans and animals. In recent years, pet owners have increasingly turned to flower essences as a gentle and holistic approach to support their furry companions' emotional balance and overall wellness. In this blog post, we will delve into the world of flower essences and their application in the care of pets.

Understanding Flower Essences:

Flower essences are natural remedies made from the infusion of flowers in water. Developed in the 1930s by Dr. Edward Bach, a British physician and homeopath, the most well-known system of flower essences is the Bach Flower Remedies. In Australia, we have our own Flower Essences derived from native Australian flowers. Australia’s flowering plants are arguably the oldest on the planet and exhibit unique characteristics that produce powerful and effective essences. Due to this, we developed the Contented Pet Flower Essence Blend which has eight different Australian native flower essences combined to address specific emotional states or patterns of behaviour in pets, helping to restore harmony and balance to the animal.

Application in Pet Care:

Pets, like humans, can experience a range of emotions, including fear, anxiety, aggression, and grief. Flower essences offer a gentle yet effective way to address these emotional imbalances in pets. Whether dealing with separation anxiety, adjusting to a new environment, or coping with trauma, flower essences can provide support without the side effects often associated with pharmaceutical interventions.

The Flower Essences included in our Contented Pet blends are:

1. Hairy Yellow Pea: Hairy Yellow Pea is designed to provide immediate comfort and reassurance during times of stress or trauma. It can be particularly helpful for pets experiencing anxiety during thunderstorms, fireworks, vet visits, or travel.

2. Pink Fairy Orchid: Pink Fairy Orchid is indicated for animals that are fearful or timid, especially in response to specific known fears such as loud noises, strangers, or other animals.

3. Ribbon Pea: Ribbon Pea is recommended for pets experiencing vague or unexplained fears, anxiety, or apprehension without a discernible cause.

4. West Australian Smokebush: West Australian Smokebush is beneficial for pets dealing with emotional shock, trauma, or grief, helping to bring comfort and healing during times of loss or upheaval.

5. Silver Princess: Silver Princess is useful for assisting pets in adjusting to change, such as moving to a new home, the introduction of a new family member or pet, or other transitions.

6. Blue China Orchid: Blue China Orchid is beneficial for the obsessive pet to help break habitual and obsessive patterns of behaviour by promoting self-control, discipline and new beginnings.

7. Orange Spiked Pea: Orange Spiked Pea is for pets that are aggressive to help them respond and react calmly when provoked without being threatening to others.

8. Snakebush: Snakebush is helpful for the needy pet who constantly needs to be by your side to feel secure and who suffers from separation anxiety. It encourages emotional independence and contentment.

How to Administer Flower Essences to Pets:

Contented Pet Flower Essence Drops are administered orally by adding 7 drops to your pet's drinking water, food, or directly into their mouth. Alternatively, you can apply the flower essence blend topically to your pet's skin or fur. We also offer a Contented Pet Mist which can be sprayed into the air above or around the animal (not directly onto their skin or fur) so the mist lightly settles on them. Alternatively, it can be used on their bedding or as a room spray in the home, car, or any new environment or when you're pet is left alone or needs support.

Conclusion:

Flower essences offer a gentle and non-invasive way to support the emotional well-being of our beloved pets. While they are not a substitute for veterinary care, they can complement conventional treatments and provide valuable support in times of emotional need. By understanding the unique qualities of different flower essences and their applications, pet owners can enhance their furry companions' quality of life and strengthen the bond they share. I know from personal experience that it works wonders on my two cats, Finn and Jax, who are “stress-heads”! You can physically see them calm down immediately and many of our other customers have seen a difference in their pets' behaviour after using it.
